Randy Pausch was able to achieve
so many of his childhood dreams for three reasons. First, his parents allowed
him to express his creativity and be a "master of his domain". His
parents allowed him to write mathematical formulas on his bedroom walls,
regardless of all of the marks he would leave on there. That showed the
tremendous support his parents had for him and were willing to allow him to
pursue the career that he wanted without any pressure. Second, he always had a
great attitude and accepted the wise counsel of others. He took to heart the
lesson to "wait long enough and people will surprise and impress
you". I am sure there were moments where he felt anger or disdain towards
other people but allowed time to pass until he felt better about them. This is great
advice for all of us because we can be quick to judge and react or allow
ourselves to jump to conclusions about how someone made us feel at a particular
moment. Third, he showed resilience and determination whenever he faced an
obstacle or rejection from others. After being rejected by Disney, his
childhood dream job, he did not quit. He felt that he just needed to prove
himself even more. He stated, "brick walls are there for a reason: they
let us prove how badly we want things". That is why he was able to achieve
so many dreams and aspirations. He searched for solutions to overcome obstacles
instead of giving up or running away.
Dreaming is important because it
motivates us and compels us to aspire to achieve something greater than what we
are. Dreaming can be a catalyst for us to invent or create something new from
within our imagination. Everyone thinks differently and responds to their
environment differently. That is why every day we discover something new. If we
freely follow our dreams, we will be able to live a happy and meaningful life.
I learned this week that I should strive to follow my dreams.
I did not have a lot of childhood dreams. One that I do remember was to become a musician. I always love listening to music and playing musical instruments. Now, I am happy to be able to play music for my family and play in my spare time. I do not think I will be able to achieve my initial dream of becoming a musician. But I do hope to play for my children and teach them how to play musical instruments. That is my new dream now in my adulthood.
